Dad shared a few stories from his time in basic training this evening…
He told of how he, and a few of his other trainees, had never seen the beach. So, they made a sojourn out to a beach in Wilmington, DE.
. . . . .
Stayed at a YMCA. Woke up sleeping next to a marine. Apparently, back then, people used to share beds.
. . . . .
One of his buddies from Scranton got a bad sunburn and had to jump the next day. (Yikes!)
Mom wasn’t in the mood to get up this morning. I called her a typical Missouri Mule.
This sparked her into this story…
Using styrofoam balls, a bunch of toothpicks dipped in glue and glitter—and a handy pipe cleaner for a hook—Mom made Sputnik ornaments in honor of mankind launching its first artificial satellite into space. This, too, was Mom and Dad’s first Christmas as a married couple. They were living in an apartment on High Street in Columbia, MO. Mom was teaching at Lee School and Dad was finishing his degree. The year was 1959.
